SynapSense raises $7 million for data center monitoring

Folsom’s SynapSense has received a $7 million investment from Robert Bosch Venture Capital.

SynapSense makes wireless systems that monitor environmental factors in data centers. Companies using the startup’s sensors and reporting technology can watch in real time and quantify improvements they make to a data center’s energy efficiency. SynapSense says their system can help cut energy costs by up to 20%. Because the systems are entirely wireless, installation does not require wiring or configuration changes to a data center’s design and infrastructure.

The company has previously raised $13 million from Emerald Technology Ventures, Sequoia Capital, American River Ventures, Nth Power and DFJ Frontier.

Freepath lands $1.5 million from Velocity, others.

Folsom startup Freepath has closed a $1.5 million Series A round led by Folsom’s Velocity Venture Capital. Local investors Strategis Early Ventures, Sacramento Angels, and Sierra Angels also participated in the round.

Freepath creates presentation software designed to make it easier to incorporate multimedia, web content, and local documents into presentations. The technology grew out of software that allows churches to present rich media, sermon notes, and song lyrics to their audiences.

Freepath is led by CEO John Stone, a co-founder of Powerschool who remained at Apple as a Vice President after Apple’s acquisition of Powerschool. He joined Freepath after the founders pitched him as a prospective angel investor. “[I] became so excited about the
technology and market opportunity that I joined the team,” he says.

SynapSense raises $10 million

Folsom’s SynapSense has raised a $10 million series B round, bringing the total amount raised by the company to $12 million.

According to Sacramento Executive,

[The] initial product offering from SynapSense enables green data centers to dramatically reduce energy costs and carbon footprint while optimizing data center operational efficiencies. Customers have found that the SynapSense Wireless Green Data Center Solution provides data center operators up to one million vital signs per day, which can enable savings of up to 30 percent of energy costs by providing new data intelligence, triangulation and tools to monitor and react to actual data center conditions.

The round was led by green-tech VC Emerald Technology Ventures of Zurich and all existing investors participated in this round. Last May the company raised $2 million from local investment firms American River Ventures and DFJ Frontier as well as Nth Power of San Francisco.

Arkos closes second round of funding

Folsom chip designer Arkos Silicon has landed $10.1 million in funding, according to a report published in the Sacramento Bee.

The firm’s second round of funding came primarily from San Francisco venture capital firm Levensohn Venture Partners, but also included money from earlier investors Bay Partners, SPM Capital and US Venture Partners — all Silicon Valley firms.

Founded in early 2005, Akros designs chips for use in network-connected devices, such as VoIP phones, wireless routers, security cameras and security badge readers.

The chips are designed to help manage energy consumption and to allow the devices to be powered by electricity coming over data lines, rather than through power cords, said company Chief Executive Francois Crepin.
